Introducing Stevie Gee. Surf-punk illustrator. Family guy. Looking at Stevie Gee’s work is never dull. His illustration borrows heavily from rockabilly and trash-punk aesthetics and gets mixed up with surfing images and old movie posters along the way. His work is never without a sense of humour, just like the man himself as Lacoste L!VE discovers!
It’s a pleasure to meet you Stevie. Can you please introduce yourself into the Dictaphone?
Hi, my name is Stevie Gee, for the past 10 years or so I have created images and designed stuff when I have been asked to in a professional manner. It’s a pleasure to meet you too.
How did you get started?
I got kicked out of the Marines for being too hardcore. Drawing was my only other skill.
What was your big break or defining moment?
Getting married and having children when I was pretty young.
How did your collaboration with Lacoste L!VE come about?
They kindly asked me and I happily said YES! Lacoste is an iconic brand with a rich heritage, it is lovely that they thought my work would suit them.
Is this the first time you’ve collaborated with a fashion brand?
No, I’ve done quite a few, actually.
Was it a challenge to fit your style with Lacoste L!VE?
No I just did my own thing, I have to admit I was surprised when my image of a man punching a crocodile in the face was accepted!
A very open brief then...
Yeah I suppose! They knew I love surfing and seemed keen that that was a theme for my collection, but I wanted to play with their crocodile so I combined those two ideas, everyone seemed happy with the results.
Did you know that this issue focuses on Tokyo? Have you ever been?
No, not yet... I am super keen to visit if you fancy helping me out with that one? I do more work in Japan than almost anywhere else but I have yet to visit myself. I am part of a Frisbee/ t-shirt show coming up soon with GASBOOK tees. Designing a Frisbee was fun, my one glows in the dark.
Do you see any similarities between Tokyo and Lacoste L!VE?
Tokyo seems like a place where boundaries can get pushed. Lacoste LIVE seems to have that same vibe, doing what they like and making interesting or unexpected collaborations, so yeah.
Do you have any exciting new projects you would like to share with us?
Yeah, I’m currently designing a motorbike with SIDEBURN magazine here in England. Right now I’m also working on the record covers for new band SWIM DEEP, watch out for them, I think they gonna be big!
What inspires your work?
Sex and fame.
