The familiar and well-worn term ‘tie-dye’ doesn’t really do the ancient art of Shibori justice. In Japanese, Shibori means literally an infinite number of ways one can bind, fold, twist, or compress cloth in order to achieve different patterns. Each method is used to achieve a particular result and is designed to work in harmony with the cloth. 1/16 Mark out the zones to be tied with a washable pen
2/16 Pass a needle with a basting thread through a square of cotton
3/16 Sew along the line you have drawn
4/16 When finished, pull the thread and gather the fabric
5/16 Pick the needle through a second square of cotton
6/16 Pull as tight as possible and make a knot
7/16 Then hang the t-shirt onto a hook
8/16 pull the fabric with one hand and ring a thick thread of cotton around with the other
9/16 Wind it tight towards you
10/16 Tie a knot when finished
11/16 Dip the t-shirt in water
12/16 Prepare the dying color in hot salted water
13/16 Dip the t-shirt into the colored solution
14/16 After few minutes, dip it into a fixative solution
15/16 Take out the threads
16/16 All the wet cotton hidden into the folds will remain white so that you obtain a unique shibori pattern
